To Conquer Every Step Of The Way

Ron’s

father once said,

“Life is like climbing a

mountain: you get half way up

and start to fall, but you need to keep on

climbing.”

This quote has been stuck in his soul for decades, ringing in our ears today.

He started at the bottom of the mountain,

in October of 1940.

He was delivered into the world in the fall when the leaves floated over the crops of his family farm;

every passing day was another step up.

From the mountains, he followed the telephone poles to school, never straying off the path,

until he got a glance of the birds soaring over the sanctuary sky.

He felt it was was time for him to fly, to climb higher.

So he left.

Out into the world, his mother running after him with enough money to last him a couple of days,

and with his eyes set on the horizon –  he scaled the province and,

on the same day he jumped from his nest;

he  landed in a job,

servicing cars.

Soon enough, he worked his way up;

gripping opportunities that came in his way.

Within a couple of months – he became a service manager and proved all those who may have doubted him that he was capable to achieve, no matter how steep the mountain.

But as soon as he was halfway up,

he slipped.

He fell when

he had to find a new way of life in a new situation.

His wife passed away;

He had to live off alone with bank money to survive.

He had to raise his three strong yet dependent children on his own.

When he had a heart attack –

he had to deal it on his own.

Yet, he kept on climbing;

He kept on surviving

and to this day,

He keeps going; he never gave up,

because no life –

no mountain –

 is impossible to

conquer.

Explication: Referring to the wonderful visit to the Bow View Manor, we learned endless lessons from our assigned elder that we had a conversation with. Although there were many lessons that we admired, there was one in particular that drew our attention; he retold the story of his life and how he met many obstacles and why he thinks “perseverance” is significant for all individuals in this world. While listening to the story of his life, we decided that we would represent his life as a mountain and through that, we brought in many incidents in his life that had caused him to fall and come back up again. We used the incidents of his life and how he dealt with it in our poem. This free verse poem has no rhythm; however, we felt the need to write a poem since we wanted to showcase a side of his life in a short but in an important way. His story of passing the difficulties in his life like a mountaineer would across a mountain was inspiring for us and upon this inspiration, we desired to write a poem on the significance of “perseverance” for this elder and for us to absorb and remember. Remember, it is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves; we just used the word “mountain” to describe how he dealt with his life and his hurdles.
